GEO/AEO: How to Get Cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity

To get cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other LLMs, put a direct answer block at the top of each page, mark content with clean schema, use data with sources, and attribute an author. It's a traffic channel that doesn't go through Google and is largely untapped.

In one sentence: AI chatbots already drive real traffic, which doesn't go through Google and doesn't appear in Search Console. Optimizing for citations is a whole channel that most people still ignore.

Why This Matters Now

More and more people are asking ChatGPT or Perplexity directly "how to do X" or "what's the best option for Y". If the LLM cites you in the response, you get high-intent traffic — and it doesn't show up in GSC because it didn't go through Google. In our own projects, referrals from AI already account for a non-trivial share of traffic.

The Four Levers

  1. Direct Answer Block at the Top. A 2-3 sentence answer to the main question, at the beginning of the page. LLMs extract better what's clear and at the top.
  2. Clean Schema. FAQPage, Article, Service. Structured markup gives the model easy-to-lift data.
  3. Data with Sources. LLMs prefer citing authoritative sources: a verifiable datum with a date makes you more citable.
  4. Author Attribution. A real author with credibility (E-E-A-T) reinforces why you should be cited.

GEO and Programmatic SEO Reinforce Each Other

Well-done programmatic SEO already produces what GEO needs: structured pages with clear data and direct answers. Add a direct answer block at the top and author attribution, and the same page ranks in Google and becomes citable by LLMs.

How to Measure It

It doesn't show up in GSC. Check it in GA4: Acquisition → Source/medium → filter chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, etc. That's your AI traffic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does GEO replace SEO? No, it complements it. The same page can rank in Google and be cited by an LLM if it's well-structured.

How do I know if an LLM is citing me? Through referral traffic in GA4 (filtering AI domains) and asking the chatbot directly about your topic.

What's the first thing I should do? A direct answer block of 2-3 sentences at the top of each page, plus clean schema.
